Rockville/Lagoon Valley Recap
On Sunday, Nov 13th, four FATRAC members travelled to the Fairfield/Vacaville area to sample some out of town singletrack. It was another great example of the awesome riding conditions in NorCal in the Fall. Even after the rains the week prior, including a sprinkle Friday night, these trails were in great condition.
We rode at Rockville first, and practically had the trails to ourselves. FATRAC V.P. Patrick remarked that this ride felt totally different than the last time FATRAC rode here, just by picking a different route, riding some of the same trails in the opposite direction, and returning back to the car from another side of the park. This shows how diverse this park is. But now navigating all these options is a little easier, thanks to the great new signage that has been added to the trail intersections. If you see a Ranger or member of the Rockville Alternative Transportation Society (R.A.T.S.), say “thank you!”
After a couple hours, we jumped into the car and headed back up the freeway a few minutes to the newer Lagoon Valley Park trail, also known as Pena Adobe when you enter from Vacaville. This trail is completely different from Rockville: there are very few “technical” sections and most of the trail is wide open with no tree cover. But don't assume this trail isn’t challenging. While most of the fire roads can now be bypassed with recently built singletrack, there are still lots of steep climbs. But after we reached the summit of the radio tower and took in the view, we agreed it was worth the hard work. The ride back down wasn’t half bad either (video to come later)!
All in all, this was a great combo to get in the mileage to justify the drive. Stay tuned to the FATRAC calendar for more rides to this area in the future. One idea is the Skyline Wilderness Trail in Napa, which will one day connect to Rockville via the Bay Area Ridge Trail.
